Hilary Fisher, director for the Campaign to End Child Poverty, said:

“Now that the goal of ending child poverty by 2020 will be enshrined in legislation, the Government is duty bound to keep its promise of eliminating this scar on our society, a historic move that is whole heartedly welcome. This will ensure that future generations of children can reach their full potential, live without fear of social exclusion and lead healthy lives through to adulthood.

“But 2020 is a long way off and the Government must not lose sight that the only way to achieve its goal of eliminating child poverty is to keep to its promise of halving it by 2010.  It will fail to keep its promise if it does not commit £3 billion in tax credits and benefits in the next Budget.”
