MIDIRS and the NCT: an ideal partnership

MIDIRS and the NCT have worked together on various projects in the past and share common goals, especially in relation to the provision of and access to information about issues and services for pregnancy, childbirth, parenting and child care.

This has now been formalised into a more comprehensive arrangement which offers greater opportunities to subscribers to MIDIRS and NCT specialist workers and students to make use of the resources of both organisations.

Since December 2008, MIDIRS Midwifery Digest, has been distributed with a copy of Perspective: the NCT publication for parent-centred midwifery. By February 2010, all of NCT’s 2000-strong network of students and qualified antenatal workers, breastfeeding counselors and postnatal leaders will be benefiting from continuous professional development through access to MIDIRS online subscription service. In addition to this, there are plans for the two organisations to work together in the future on products for consumers as well as resources for education and training.

Sally Marchant, midwife and editor of MIDIRS Midwifery Digest:
’The NCT has been an important mainstay in raising issues around, as well as actual provision of resources for pregnancy and childbirth that are women and family centred.  In recent years they have worked hard to expand their services and to make them more accessible to a wider and more diverse population.  At the same time, they have maintained a high standard in the education and training programmes offered through their organisation.  As editor of the MIDIRS Digest, I am delighted by the possibilities that will arise from this partnership that will doubtless be of benefit to both organisations’.

Mary Newburn, head of policy research, NCT:

’The NCT is really pleased to be establishing a stronger working relationship with MIDIRS. We share a commitment to providing evidence-based information for midwives and parents, and encouraging continuing professional learning and development of services to meet the needs of mothers, fathers and babies.  The NCT has championed user involvement in maternity services and maternity research. We hope that through this partnership and the new publication, Perspective, more midwives will have a chance to find out about the NCT’s ethos and that together we can achieve even greater things for families around the time of birth and new parenthood’.
